When you grab other people's money to help someone, you are not being compassionate; you are being greedy. Compassionate people help others with their own resources, as I have consistently done, donating money to various causes, despite counting every cent when it comes to spending on myself. If I want to help someone, I help them, I do not demand that someone else helps them in my stead and then take credit for it. And if I am not willing to help them, then, at least, I keep my mouth shut and do not expect others to do something I myself am not doing.
In addition, the best way to help people is to teach them self-sufficiency, not give them plain charity money. "If you give a man a fish, you will feed him for a day. If you give him a fishing pole, you will feed him for a lifetime." Look at what people like Grand Cardone or Dave Ramsey are doing: that is how you help the poor - you educate them about finances, so they could create and multiply wealth themselves.
I should mention that I am anything but a conservative person. Conservative people are generally stuck in the past, while I am looking forward. And returning to the old good model where everyone was hooked on the king's support does not seem like a good way forward to me.
